Sermon Outline

Leviticus 13-14

The Death of Shame

Shame is like a living death that causes us to hide but we can be cleansed for God’s presence by opening up to Jesus and letting him cover us.

  1. The shame of COVID

  2. The shame of having a defiling skin disease (13:1-46)

    • Skin diseases that defile (tsara’at is almost certainly not leprosy)

    • Exclusion as an experience of living death (Num. 12:1-15)

    • A challenge to look within

    • Shame is about how you are seen in light of what you have done or others have done to you

  3. The spreading stain of shame (13:47-59; 14:33-47)

    • Defiling “diseases” (tsara’at) in fabrics and houses

    • A reminder of how sin impacts the human world

    • Shame can spread throughout your life

  4. The removal of shame (14:1-31)

    • God had to first heal the defiling skin disease

    • Cleansing was a staged-process of drawing near to God again

      • ONE: Sprinkling to be made clean (3-7)

      • TWO: Waiting, shaving, and washing to be made clean (8-9)

      • THREE: Atonement to be made clean (10-20)

    • Shame is removed through you being cleansed, being clothed and being accepted

  5. Jesus removes our shame (Mark 1:40-45)

    • Are you willing to receive cleansing even without prior healing?

    • Are you willing to stop hiding and be vulnerable with the Lord?

    • What do you most need from Jesus right now – him to accept you, to clean you or to clothe you?
