Sermon Outline

1 Corinthians 11:17-34

The Lord’s Supper is a Seal

The Lord’s Supper seals God’s promises of salvation upon believers who partake by repentance and faith and it strengthens their communion with Christ and with each other.

  1. To eat or not to eat?

  2. The Lord’s Supper is not just a sign it is also a seal (11:17-22, 29-31; 10:16; cf. Romans 4:11; Acts 10:47 + Ephesians 1:13)

  3. We must approach the Lord’s Supper with due seriousness (23-32)

    • Worthy partaking brings blessing (10:16-17; 11:24-26)

      • Forgiveness of sins

      • Assurance of salvation

      • Growth in holiness

      • Strengthening your bond with the triune God and with other believers

    • Unworthy partaking brings judgement (11:27-30)

      • Discipline for believers (31-32)

      • Confirms judgement for unbelievers

    • This is why the elders have pastoral oversight of the Lord’s Supper

  4. Partaking in a worthy manner requires examination and discernment (27-29)

    • Examining yourself means self-examination of your heart and life before God

      • Identifying sins to confess to God for forgiveness

      • Confirm you have faith in Christ and are willing to love and obey him

    • Discerning the body of Christ means acknowledging that the bread and juice point to Jesus’ death in your place

      • It is not referring to Jesus’ body being physically present in the bread

      • It is not referring to other Christians who are elsewhere called ‘the body of Christ’

      • It is referring to the very real participation in the death of Jesus that takes place as you partake (1 Cor. 10:16)

    • Deciding when to not partake of the Lord’s Supper

      • If you are not a Christian

      • If you are aware of sins of which you are unwilling to repent

      • If you are at odds with a fellow believer and have not yet addressed your possible fault in the situation (Matthew 5:21-24)

      • If you are under formal church discipline (Matthew 18:17; 1 Corinthians 5:9-13; 2 Corinthians 2:5-11)

    • Deciding when partaking of the Lord’s Supper may particularly help

      • Struggling with doubts. (Mark 9:24)

      • Experiencing the weight of your sin. (Matthew 11:28-30; 1 John 1:9)

      • Enduring unwarranted hostility or isolation from other believers. (Romans 12:18)
