Sermon Outline

Mark 10:1-12

God Has Given Marriage for Life

Marriage is a lifelong union given to humanity by God so we should honour and protect it.

  1. A trap for Jesus – Is divorce lawful? (1-2)

  2. What did Moses say? (3-5) (Deuteronomy 24:1-4)

    • Issue a divorce certificate

    • A concession due to the Israelites’ hardness of heart and to protect women.

  3. What did Moses first say? (6-9) (Genesis 1:27; 2:24)

    • Marriage is one man and one woman

    • Marriage is a lifelong union spiritual, emotional, physical, financial etc.

    • Marriage is done before God

    • Marriage is not to be broken

  4. A Christian view on divorce:

    • Always the result of sin (hard heartedness)

    • Always forgivable Ephesians 5:25-32; 1 John 1:9

    • Not always sinful

      • Marital unfaithfulness

      • Desertion by an unbeliever 1 Corinthians 7:10-16

  5. A Christian view on remarriage (10-12)

    • Adultery in most cases (Matt. 5:32; 19:9; Mark 10:10-12; Luke 16:18)

    • Allowed when the ‘exceptions’ apply

  6. Christians should seek to protect and honour marriage

    • Single people – don’t enter marriage lightly!

    • Married people – work on your marriage!

    • Divorced people – Look to Jesus for grace!

    • Everyone – champion the goodness and sanctity of marriage!
